Miami is one of the most culturally diverse and exciting cities in the world. More than half of its residents were born in other nations, and many of them live in dynamic neighborhoods where their native languages, cuisines and customs flourish and enrich those of their adopted city. In the past two decades, the number of Miami-based cultural organizations has exploded from a few hundred to more than 1,400, and the city's reputation as a cultural crossroads has become widely known. Miami's existing performance spaces and venues are unable to accommodate this dramatic growth in numbers, diversity and quality of cultural organizations. Visionary leaders within local arts organizations and the Miami Dade County Commission, realizing that the arts are essential to the quality of life of any great urban center, developed a plan to create a major Performing Arts Center that would transform Miami into a truly cosmopolitan city. |

Project Description: |
Legislative support is requested for the funding of the Regional Cultural Facilities grant program. The legislation establishing the grant program was signed into law by the Governor in 2002. However, no funds were appropriated for it in 2002 or 2003. In 2004 the Miami Performing Arts Center submitted a 'rollover' request under the $2.5 million and was awarded $500,000. Earlier this year, the Miami Performing Arts Center submitted the 2005-06 Regional Cultural Facilities grant in the amount of $2.5 million requesting funds to purchase and install the stage compensating lift in the Ballet/Opera House, a Vari-Lite lighting system and choral risers in the Concert Hall. The stage compensating lift is an essential part of the motorized scenery changing system. The lift will be used with stage wagons to facilitate movement of scenery from the side and rear stages to the main stage during performances. Vari-Lites are automated, computer-driven spotlights that are capable of changing color, focus, direction and beam type instantaneously. The choral risers will allow greater flexibility and use of space in the Concert Hall. The Florida Arts Council recommended, on November 10, 2004, funding of $2.5 million for the above scope. The next step is to ensure the Regional Cultural Facilities grant program is included in the FY 2005-06 State Budget.
When completed in 2006, the Miami Performing Arts Center will bring the finest local, national and international performances to the heart of downtown Miami. The 2,400-seat Sanford and Dolores Ziff Ballet Opera House and the 2,200-seat Carnival Symphony Hall will be the first permanent homes for four of the region's leading performing arts organizations - the Concert Association of Florida, Florida Grand Opera, Miami City Ballet and New World Symphony. A 200-seat black box Studio Theatre will provide flexible space for a wide variety of theater, cabaret and other entertainment and the 57,000-square-foot Plaza for the Arts will be ideal for outdoor performances and community festivals. |
