Community Budget Issue Requests - Tracking Id #1395
Sarasota Bay Restoration

Requester: David Morre, Executive Directo Organization: Southwest Florida Water Management District

Project Title: Sarasota Bay Restoration Date Submitted 1/12/2005 3:13:58 PM

Sponsors: Bennett

Statewide Interest:
The Sarasota Bay Estuary has experienced a decline in water quality and sea grass coverage and a significant decrease in inter-tidal wetlands habitat. Shoreline habitats have been replaced by sea walls and construction of homes and commercial businesses. The loss of the bay's natural shoreline and sea grass acreage has resulted in a decline in the aesthetic, recreational, and commercial value of the bay, as well as a loss of habitat for native fish and wildlife. Sarasota Bay is made up of approximately 52 square miles of open water and extends from Anna Maria Sound and Palma Sola Bay in the north, to Venice Inlet in the south. It is a District SWIM Priority Water Body. It is also designated as an Estuary of National Significance, by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and as an Outstanding Florida Water. In order to protect the bay from further degradation, preservation and restoration activities must be undertaken, including inter-tidal wetlands restoration, stormwater retrofits, and restoration of shoreline habitats
