Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
From July, 1995 to present (October 28,2004), First Step's Mothers and Infants Program has delivered 137 substance-free babies due to their mother's participation in this residential substance abuse treatment program. It has been estimated that since program inception in 1995, taxpayers have saved approximately 25 million dollars compared to the cost of treating babies born with neonatal illness associated with in-utero exposure to substance abuse. This intensive Level II Residential Treatment Program is comprised of 4 phases of treatment which address individual needs pertaining to abstinence, prenatal and postnatal care, parenting skills, mental health and wellness, addiction education, relapse prevention, social skills training, values clarification, life management skills, family counseling, vocational rehabilitation and opportunity exploration. The women are also linked to community based resources that support recovery and provide continuity of care. To date, 100% of the infants born to mothers participating in this program have been substance free. Over 130 pregnant substance abusing women with an average stay of eight months, has produced 120 drug-free babies saving thousand of dollars in hospitalization and treatment costs. This is a four level treatment with the final a transition reentry to the community making them productive and responsible mothers and citizens. The program has grown from 4 beds in 1995 to 11 beds currently, with the number of clients increasing from several surrounding counties. First Step has been treating addictions for 35 years, community based, licensed and CARF accredited. At present 100% of babies are born drug free and 85 % of the clients are employed at discharge.
