Statewide Interest:
National surveys, other large-scale studies, research reviews and meta-analyses have revealed that children from divorced or disrupted families have more behavioral problems and are more likely to engage in delinquent behaviors than children from intact families. This project will reduce the number the number of children who become involved in ongoing delinquent behavior by addressing the specific needs of this population.

Project Description:
Funding to support eight-week psycho-educational support groups in which children and adolescents participate in 60 minute sessions that include age-appropriate activities that will increase their ability to cope in the aftermath of divorce and family transition. The parents of the children and adolescents attend the Focus on the Children psycho-educational groups concurrently with their children. This program provides them with knowledge and skills to improve family functioning, build stronger family relations, and enable children to positively adjust to changes.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
For the children: Increased ability to positively adjust to changes, dismissal of current criminal charges, decreased future involvement with the Juvenile Justice System; decreased at risk behaviors, decreased behavioral problems in school. For the parents: improved communication, conflict resolution and negotiation skills, increased awareness of the negative impact of conflict on their children's successful development, and increased cooperation in parenting.
