Statewide Interest: |
In the state of Florida, there are 6,750 delinquency referrals per 100,000. In FY99/00, 104,176 juveniles were referred for delinquency. Intervention programs can help decrease recidivism. Each percentage point of decline in recidivism is worth an estimated $16.25 million in long-term cost savings, including funds spent by law enforcement, the juvenile justice, the adult correctional system, and the projected savings to victims. |

Project Description: |
Adjudicated teens referred by Bay Area Youth Services will be taught real-life work skills at Lowry Park Zoo. The Program will directly impact 100 teen participants directly and will also serve more than 3,000 additional youth as mentees, and through hands-on programming conducted by program participants. The Program focuses on zoo-related fields that parallel a practical business interest in the greater community, including horticulture, food services, educational programs, and retail. Training classes will include specific business-related topics and skills needed to make practical plans and run a profitable business. Area business partners will be recruited to serve as mentors. |
