Project Description:
The upper basin of the Kissimmee River Watershed is the headwaters of the Everglades. The Kissimmee Upper Basin Restoration Initiative is an integrated project with multiple objectives. It will improve groundwater and surface water quality, protect the ecosystems of lakes and enhance stormwater management in the basin. It will improve the quality of water leaving the basin and flowing into the newly restored Kissimmee River and ultimately the Everglades.

Is this a project related to 2004 hurricane damage? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
The inititative focuses on older urban stormwater management systems that were designed with insufficient stormwater treatment. The implementation of the initiative will result in improvements in stormwater management, flood control and water quality in the Upper Kissimmee Basin. This will result in a substantial reduction of pollutant loadings although no modeling has been performed to quantify the reduction.
