This project is part of the Turnpike Expansion Water Management Project which has developed into a large cooperative effort involving six water management agencies at local and state levels, and is expected to improve regional flexibility in water management strategies. For example, the north-south interconnection of canals between the C-12 Canal and Peters Road should facilitate later connection of the C-12 and C-11 canals for the regional redistribution of surface water. Plans for expansion of the Florida Turnpike between Griffin road and Sunrise boulevard may provide an opportunity to coordinate with the Florida Turnpike enterprise so as to reduce construction costs while addressing the Turnpike's drainage requirements. |

Project Description: |
This project is a joint initiative between the city of Fort Lauderdale, the City of Plantation and the Old Plantation Water control district. The City of Fort Lauderdale is seeking means of providing additional recharge to the City's Peele-Dixie wellfield and in coordination with expansion of the Florida Turnpike by the Florida Department of Transportation. Coordination of these projects will enable the City to make surface water management improvements for the purpose of providing additional aquifer recharge while assisting the FDOT with its drainage concerns. Culvert improvements on the C-12 Canal near the intersection of Sunrise Boulevard with the Florida Turnpike. Expansion of the existing culverts will allow greater recharge from the C-12 to provide drainage during extreme rain events. A culvert will be constructed under Broward Boulevard to provide more direct recharge from the C-12 to the wellfield. |
|
Is this a project related to 2004 hurricane damage? |
No |
|
Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
This recharge project will help to protect the integrity of the Biscayne Aquifer through abatement of saltwater intrusion and hydrocarbon contaminants and will help to protect water supplies for the City of Fort Lauderdale and the utility's wholesale customers. Secondary canal interconnections associated with this project may also provide future wetland improvements by providing a route for recharge of the Pond Apple Slough. Improved interconnections along the length of the Turnpike ditch between Sunrise Boulevard and Peters Road will increase the amount of water that can be conveyed to the Peele-Dixie wellfield and will provide storage and treatment of runoff from the Florida turnpike. |
