Project Description: |
The City of Miami Beach provides After School(2-6PM) and Summer programming (8AM-5PM for 9 weeks) to approximately 1,100 resident youth. Athletic Leagues and Programming varies during the season for 9 months out of the year. The target age groups are from Kindergarten to High School age. The Capital improvement component is for 2 small scale recreational facilities (approximate cost of hardware is $50,000 to $ 75,000 each), which would target all age groups but would show a higher impact of users within the teens. A key component of the athletic leagues is the 3 on 3 basketball program, which provides youth an after-school alternative. The City does not currently charge a fee for participation in this program, and is aggressively seeking funding sources other than a direct fee on the participant. Additionally, athletic leagues provide a more attractive style of program for teenagers, many of whom may be reluctant to participate in a more traditional after-school program. |

Is this a project related to 2004 hurricane damage? |
No |
|
Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
Continued After-School and Summer programs ensure youth growing-up within the park system. These youth are less likely to entertain outside and detrimental participation in other unsupervised activities, such as involvement in gangs and/or drugs. Current numbers show most participants return for subsequent years in the program. The addition of smaller recreational facilities throughout the city would allow youth a legal place to participate in various recreational activities without constantly being reported to Police by concerned residents.
