Project Description:
The Little Lake Fairview Stormwater retrofit project includes building new retention and detention ponds to treat current runoff flowing directly into Little Lake Fairview, an existing lake that is a part of the Middle St. Johns River Basin. The City of Orlando is working with Orange County, SJRWMD, FDOT, and concerned citizens to construct a treatment system that enhances the stormwater quality entering Little Lake Fairview from adjacent runoff basins. Earlier stormwater studies identified this drainage basin as a significant nutrient source hastening the decline of the water quality in Little Lake Fairview and areas downstream. Currently this runoff receives little or no treatment prior to entering the lake and accounts for approximately 45 percent of the lake's pollutant loading. The project will also treat existing and proposed runoff from the I-4 widening project currently under design within FDOT. The project also includes the restoration of existing stressed wetlands located on the south side of the lake. In addition to the stormwater benefits to the basin, this project will also allow for improvements to a local high school by providing treatment for additional runoff that may be generated.
