The project is a restoration project designed and intended to restore Courtroom 6-1 in the Courthouse. The Courtroom has deteriorated through the years and is in need of a structural, environmental and aesthetic "makeover." The Dade County Courthouse is a landmark site. Constructed in 1928, the Courthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989 and also holds the distinction as one of the oldest government buildings in Florida. The Courthouse served as City Hall for the City of Miami and Miami-Dade County in the first half of the 20th century. In 1995, the Courthouse Lobby was restored following decades of deterioration. |

Project Description: |
Funding is requested as recommended by the Florida Historical Commission for restoration of Courtroom
6-1 in the Dade County Courthouse. The immediate threats to Courtroom 6-1 are structural, environmental and aesthetic in scope. Extensive structural damage includes corroded pipes, electrical wires and junction boxes; the wooden scrollwork is rotting, chipped, scratched and worn; and the wooden gallery and jury benches are deteriorated and rotting. Also, the Courtroom is infested throughout with termites. Aesthic damage includes unsightly acoustic tiles that cover the original painted, plaster walls. Vintage lamps, sconces and ceiling fans have been lost, destroyed, or misplaced. The original patina on the beams, railings floors and decks need restoration to the original finish. |

Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
The restoration of Courtroom 6-1 will have a direct economic impact on the surrounding community. The construction/restoration work will provide jobs for residents of Miami-Dade County and the City of Miami. Visitations to the Dade County Courthouse and Courtroom 6-1 are projected at 300,000 visitors per year. The financial impact of spending related to the increased number of visits (restaurants, stores & shops) is projected to increase. The Courthouse and Courtroom 6-1 will become a focal point among downtown tourist attractions which include the Historical Museum of Southern Florida, Miami Art Museum, Bayside Marketplace and Miami-Dade County Library. |
