Lake Tuscawilla provides pre-treatment for stormwater runoff through an "alum injection pond" prior to wet detention treatment and discharge through existing drainage wells. The new expansion will provide capacity for new development and re-development within the basin, thus eliminating the need for small individual drainage retention areas on each development site. The regional retention area will provide a higher degree of treatment meeting, or exceeding, water quality requirements of the St. Johns River Water Management District.
