Project Description: |
The Englewood Interstate Connector (EIC) is a 13 mile long corridor connecting the Cape Haze peninsula and southern Sarasota County to Interstate 75. The project will serve regional mobility and as an essential evacuation route for Sarasota, Charlotte, and Lee Counties. The Boards of County Commissioners from Sarasota and Charlotte Counties pledged cooperation to expedite this project. Sarasota County completed the Project Development and Environmental Study in 2003 and is currently managing design for the first two phases of the EIC. This project meets National Environmental Policy Act requirements and is eligible for Federal funding. In Sarasota County alone, the population is expected to grow from a 2004 population of 358,000 to 476,000 by 2025. Much of this growth is expected to locate in southern Sarasota County. In addition to providing for evacuation needs, the project will also serve to improve traffic circulation throughout southern Sarasota County. It will serve designated employment centers in the corridor located in Sarasota and Charlotte Counties and planned economic development within the City of North Port. Currently in design, construction on Phases 1 & 2 could begin as early as 2009 with continued funding. |
