Community Budget Issue Requests - Tracking Id #21
Parenting Wisely/Choices

Requester: Mary Lynn Ulrey, Chief Executive Officer Organization: The Drug Abuse Comprehensive Coordinating Office, Inc. (DACCO)

Project Title: Parenting Wisely/Choices Date Submitted 1/4/2005 9:30:09 AM

Sponsors: Miller

Statewide Interest:
This project is a formula for decreasing child failure, parental abuse, family discord, and the resulting statewide cost of government intervention through juvenile justice or child protective services. Young children ages 9 to 18 are at risk for substance abuse especially when parents are unable to provide adequate parenting. The cycle will continue if intervention does not occur. The goal of this project is to help parents questioning issues with their children to be able to access a drug screen, assessment by a professional and provide an action plan and for those in need, actually go into homes of identified children using the science-base program, Parenting Wisely, and teach the parents how to parent. The outcome is a stronger, more competent parent, more family cohesion, and improved learning and school behavior from the identified child. This collaboration between counseling and schools at an early age will provide the prevention necessary to thwart future delinquent behavior.

Project Description:
Parents need resources to determine if their children are at risk for substance use and abuse. This program would provide Drug Screening, Assessment, Parenting skills through a "Parenting Wisely" intervention that is a self-administered, computer-based program that teaches parents and their 9-18 year old children important skills for combating risk factors for substance use and abuse. The parenting Wisely program uses a risk-focused approach to reduce family conflict and child behavior problems, including stealing, vandalism, defiance of authority, bullying, and poor hygiene. The highly interactive and nonjudgmental CD-ROM format accelerates learning, and parents use new skills immediately.
