Project Description:
This pilot project, targeting four (4) of Duval County's eleven (11) challenged schools will provide mentors for youth, grades 5 - 9, with academic and social challenges focusing on students' individual needs centering activities at school, at home, and within their respective communities. Volunteers/members will be trained to work directly with teachers, churches, and community residents to address the need for positive male (and female) relationships. MAD DADS will also conduct specialized Rites-of-Passage classes for selected youth in the DADS Club - SANKOFA: A NON-TRADITIONAL RITES OF PASSAGE PROJECT.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
This project will match 20 DADS Club volunteers/members with a minimum of 200 youth in the four challenged schools to (1) reduce the number of youth having contact with alternative schools, the juvenile court system, and local law enforcement; (2) develop positive relationships between Club volunteers/members, students and their families in the communities where they live, thereby decreasing high-risk criminal and/or inappropriate behavior, and; (3) improve academic and social achievement, along with the self-esteem of selected youth.
