Project Description:
State funding has helped to support the research programs and infrastructure at Moffitt Cancer Center for more that 18 years. On average, the amount designated to the Center has been $10.9 million per year. In the past five years, however, the growth of Moffitt Cancer Center has been nothing short of phenomenal, and the increased demand for cancer research and treatment has been staggering. The completion of Moffitt's new Research Tower in 2003 doubled Moffitt's research capabilities and its outpatient clinic services and diagnostic capabilities. Therefore, Moffitt is requesting an additional funding from the state Legislature for the coming budget year to support increased needs. This brings the total appropriations request to $20 million. The statistics speak to the need for this increase. Consider over the past five years: Outpatient visits have grown from 95,937 in 1998 to 195,636 in 2003. Patients have come from across Florida and beyond, representing all 50 states. Inpatient volumes have steadily increased from 4,995 in 1998 to 5,829 in 2003. Moffitt's space gain from 1997 to 2004 has gone from 436,412 to 1,363,894 square feet - with more than 185,000 devoted to cancer research. Clinical Trials and research studies of investigational drugs have grown from 25 in 1998 to more than 200 in 2004. In addition, Moffitt's charity care has risen as well. In 1999, Moffitt realized $6.2 million in uncompensated care. That figure has risen to more than $11 million in FY2004. The only way to lower these numbers and save more lives is through research into new cures and new understanding of how cancer develops. The need is criticaland growing. During this time, however, the state appropriation has remained essentially the same. An increase in the state appropriation will support an increased number of clinical trials at the Cancer Center, which will in turn support the increased number of patients coming to the institution. Likewise, "bench to bedside" access to scientific research and proven therapies will be accelerated and preventive research for at-risk segments of the population will be expanded.
