Volunteers of America of Florida, the chartered Florida affiliate for Volunteers of America, is a 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit organization serving people with special needs in seventeen offices throughout Florida. Volunteers of America of Florida's veterans programs and services are directed at veterans who are poor and have special needs; many suffer from a variety of physical and often mental ailments. These programs provide housing and outreach programs that are funded through Federal, state and corporate grants. The programs have reached over 5,000 male and female veterans and offer transitional and permanent housing, drop-in centers and an innovative outreach program that includes the Florida Veterans Mobile Service Center. |

Project Description: |
The Florida Veterans Mobile Service Center is an outreach program to poor veterans in the state of Florida. It travels throughout the state of Florida providing a range of outreach, health, dental and social service interventions to veterans living in encampments, on the streets, in derelict boats, in condemned housing and in other places not meant for human habitation. The unique "user-friendly" approach of this mobile unit has led to many successful housing placements. The goal of the Mobile Service Center is to be on the road two hundred days a year. To date, it has traveled more than 50,000 miles to offer its services to 125 veterans a month, on average. |
