Project Description:
The Cutler Slough Rehydration project will restore the historic Cutler Creek that flows through the Charles Deering Estate and will protect historic, cultural and environmental resources within the glade. The freshwater will flow through transverse glades and wetland, including tropical hardwood hammock, mangroves and saltmarch, into Biscayne Bay. Phase one currently funded at $258,050 will construct an adjustable weir near the bridge on Old Cutler Trail enabling rehydration to be accomplished solely via rainfall. An additional $917,000 is needed to restore five acres of freshwater wetland on a newly acquired ten-acre property and to construct a culvert system to allow water flow under Old Cutler Road into Deering Estate. The funding has been requested from the Biscayne Bay Regional Restoration Coordination Team which receives funds from the South Florida Water Management District.
