Project Description:
There has been an emerging public health crisis among African-Americans and Hispanic Americans--the Silent Epidemic of Alzheimer's Disease. Alzheimer's disease is more prevalent among African-Americans than among whites - with estimates ranging from 14% to almost 100% higher. Hispanics are twice as likely as non-Hispanic whites to develop Alzheimer's disease. ReachOUT FLA will attempt to replicate the STARS (Support Through Alzheimer's Relief System program). This is a federally funded demonstration program (in North Florida) that has received national recognition for its community education and outreach in the minority community. Based on the unmet needs of the underserved multi-cultural population affected by Alzheimer's disease, we propose to expand the STARS grant throughout Florida. Goals include:. Increase and enhance community outreach, network, and awareness of dementia services to underserved minority individuals and families. Increase awareness on disaster preparedness including hurricane response. Increase and enhance support services, including a multi-language, 24/7 telephone support line. Develop a culturally appropriate awareness campaign through faith-based and other community organizations that includes key leaders and members of the target communities. Prevent costly crisis care often caused by a lack of preventive services.

Is this a project related to 2004 hurricane damage? No
