Project Description:
The Computer Clubhouse at LHHA is a vibrant program, which builds a creative environment, allows youth to explore their own ideas and to use high-end software in creating dynamic and innovative projects that have real-world applications. Along with providing access to technology, the Computer Clubhouse also provides a creative and safe after-school learning environment where young people, from ages 8 to 18, from underserved communities work wiht adult mentors who can direct them through their projects, help explore their own ideas, develop skills, and build confidence in them through the use of technology. Under the guidance of community mentors, youth are able to record a CD or video, create and animate robots, and create Web pages and graphics for their own businesses. To date, we have served over 700 young people ages 8 to 18, with about 35% of those being young girls. Aside from access to technology and mentors, the Computer Clubhouse offers two main subprograms: Girl's Day and Clubhouse to College/Clubhouse to Career (C2C). The C2C supports Clubhouse members in planning for the future and realizing their potential, leveraging the technology skills and experience they receive at the Clubhouse. The Girl's Day program encourages young girls to explore technology, math and science more fully, where in a mixed environment they might be more intimitated. The Computer Clubhouse is a year-round, after-school program that invites active participation from the area youth.
