Statewide Interest: |
The program for cardiac services is a full-service operation - allowing the children with heart disease in Florida to remain in the state. This saves funds, such as out of state referrals that are significantly more costly than when these cases are handled in the local area. Once fully developed, this same model can be expanded and placed throughout the state - thus making this regional program a state-wide program. |

Project Description: |
In tandem with the pediatric cardiovascular program at the University of Florida in Gainesville, the entire Northern Florida area (Pensacola, Panama City, Tallahassee, Daytona Beach, St. Augustine, Jacksonville, and Gainesville) are linked together by a telemedicine program. This allows the physicians to evaluate babies and children in the local hospitals, and it has the images transmitted to the specialists in Gainesville or Jacksonville. This system saves money by decreasing travel time of families, allows for a more expeditious confirmation of diagnosis, which will also decrease morbidity and mortality of these pediatric cardiac patients, and weaves together the personnel and resources of communities with the cardiac center. |
