Project Description:

The scope of the project consists of the construction of storm sewer improvements in the area approximately bounded by N.W./S.W. 62 Avenue, N.W./S.W. 69 Avenue, S.W. 8 Street, and Tamiami Canal Road. The improvements consists of exfiltration trench (french drain), manholes, catch basins, storm sewer pipe for gravity conveyance, cross drains, new outfalls, retrofit of existing outfalls, and surface restoration. Note: Storm water from this project discharges to the C-4 Canal (Tamiami Canal) which connects to the Biscayne Bay via the Miami River. Biscayne Bay is a SFWMD priority water body.

Mitigation of flood conditions in the regional system that will complement the SFWMD major improvements to the C-4 Canal (basin) which connects to the Biscayne Bay via the Miami River, reduced flood damage insurance claims, and water quality enhancements to the C-4 Canal, Miami River and Biscayne Bay.

Describe how it will reduce loadings, identify anticipated load reductions for total suspended solids, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and other contaminants, and specify the practices that will be used to reduce loadings:

For this project, pre-treatment of the surface runoff occurs in the grass swales. Once the runoff enters the storm drain system, sumps in the storm structures will provide for initial collection of sediments along with baffles to retain oil and greases. Existing and new exfiltration trenches will be incorporated into the proposed gravity storm collection system in areas where surface elevations permit sufficient hydraulic head above the October high water elevation of 3.00. This measure will provide treatment for the runoff from impervious surfaces. Weirs will be constructed in storm structures immediately downstream of exfiltration trenches to retain low flows in the trenches for exfiltration rather than allowing free discharge. Exfiltration trenches will not be constructed on collection systems discharging into the four pump stations to prevent groundwater from entering the stations. Instead, BMP water quality treatment units will be installed on pump station collection systems to provide treatment by removing oils and 80% of particles with specific gravity of 2.65 down to 150 microns from runoff prior to pumping. Also, existing exfiltration trenches will be cleaned to remove all accumulated debris_and silt in order to optimize operation of the existing drainage system.
