Project Description: |
Camillus House, Inc. has provided humanitarian services to homeless persons in Miami-Dade for more than 44 years. Today the organization offers comprehensive services through multiple, integrated program areas including health care, housing, drug and mental health treatment, social services. Camillus is now requesting $100,000 in support of Camillus Health Concern's school-based clinic at Frederick Douglass Elementary School. Camillus became the primary health care provider at the school in 1999, with a staffing mix that includes nurse practitioners, pediatricians, nurses, and assistants. Camillus had obtained two private, multi-year grants to fund the program, and those grants have ended. The Department of Health is funding the program through the end of this school year. Continued funding through DOH would allow Camillus to ensure that the school continues to have on-site health care for students and their siblings. Camillus anticipates providing more than 1,200 encounters to at least 440 children over the one-year period. Frederick Douglass Elementary is a public school located in the poverty stricken community of Overtown, in downtown Miami. The student body of 650 children is approximately 34% African-American and 65% Hispanic. The vast majority of the student body lives at or below the poverty level, and students face a myriad of problems as a result. Most of the children have no access to health care outside of school. During its 5 years of service at the school, Camillus has found the 10 most common health care diagnoses to include: respiratory infections, treatment of minor injuries, dermatological conditions such as fungal infections, allergic reactions and rashes, headaches, abdominal pain, obesity screening and counseling, asthma and related conditions, conjunctivitis and eye complaints, and pain in limbs and backaches. |

Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
Camillus ensures that the student population at Frederick Douglass has access to quality health care. Outcomes documented in the past year include: 98% of walk-in students are able to return to the classroom, rather than going home; 100% of patients had full compliance with immunizations; 60% of teachers send students to the clinic at least once a week; 100% of teachers report the clinic is extremely important to students and 90% are extremely satisfied with services. Important public health issues are also addressed through aggressive efforts to identify, treat, and educate regarding communicable infections such as head lice, pinkeye, and ringworm. |
