Statewide Interest: |
This project addresses improving water quality and aquatic habitats of coastal water resources such as shellfish harvesting. The basin is designated a priority watershed under the 1987 Surfact Water Improvement Management (SWIM) Act. This basin includes the Guana-Tolomato-Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve. |

Project Description: |
The Northern Coastal Basin Initiative is an ongoing effort to protect and enhance the Guana, Matanzas, Tolomato and Halifax Rivers and their tributaries. An increased need for water quality improvements and the adverse effect of cumulative stormwater on coastal water resources, particularly the shellfish harvesting areas, highlighted the need for a watershed-base project. Within this basin, is the Guana-Tolomato-Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve. Funding through this inititative will enhance water quality in all the basin rivers. |

Describe how it will reduce loadings, identify anticipated load reductions for total suspended solids, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and other contaminants, and specify the practices that will be used to reduce loadings: |
Implementation of master stormwater projects will provide stormwater treatment to meet current permitting standards. Overall impacts and load reductions of total suspended solids, total nitrogen, total phosphorus and other contaminants from project implementation will be evaluated from data collected by ongoing monitoring programs and watershed models that are currently in development. Projects will implement best management practices to provide stormwater retention and treatment in the watershed that will result in reduced volumes and enhanced quality of discharges to surface waters. |
