Project Description:
The Northern Coastal Basin Initiative is an ongoing effort to protect and enhance the Guana, Matanzas, Tolomato and Halifax Rivers and their tributaries. An increased need for water quality improvements and the adverse effect of cumulative stormwater on coastal water resources, particularly the shellfish harvesting areas, highlighted the need for a watershed-base project. Within this basin, is the Guana-Tolomato-Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve. Funding through this inititative will enhance water quality in all the basin rivers.

Is this a project related to 2004 hurricane damage? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Stormwater treatment/management facilities; improved water quality in the watershed (e.g. less pollutants in runoff; less total suspended solids, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus; acres of invasive exotic vegatation and aquatic vegetation.

Implementation of master stormwater projects will provide stormwater treatment to meet current permitting standards. Overall impacts and load reductions of total suspended solids, total nitrogen, total phosphorus and other contaminants from project implementation will be evaluated from data collected by ongoing monitoring programs and watershed models that are currently in development. Projects will implement best management practices to provide stormwater retention and treatment in the watershed that will result in reduced volumes and enhanced quality of discharges to surface waters.
