Statewide Interest: |
Lee Mental Health has purchased the former Charter Glade Hospital property to enable us to expand services for individuals in acute psychiatric distress. This request is to support the renovation of the new property, to enable the Center to make capital improvements to its current sites, and to improve the capacity of both locations to serve individuals with severe psychiatric illness in case of future hurricanes or major storms. Due to the financial demands of the new acquisition, combined with the financial stress created by this hurricane season, we will not be able to make the proposed renovations for several years without the support of the state. |

Project Description: |
District 8 has a shortage of intensive mental health services. Charter Glade Hospital closed in 2000, and G. Pierce Wood closed in 2002. The only psychiatric inpatient care available to residents of Lee County are Lee Mental Health's 30 crisis stabilization beds.
Lee Mental Health, in a partnership with a private real estate investment group, purchased the former Charter Glade Hospital, and has obtained a loan for renovations.
The Center's current properties have capital demands that we will not be able to meet next year due to the demands of the above stated property development. Capital items will need to be replaced to integrate the 2 campuses, and all locations are seeking to improve hurricane preparedness. We are requesting funding to support the infrastructure and increase hurricane preparedness of the buildings where we currently deliver services, our newly acquired site, and apartments owned by the Center that are homes for those we serve. The CSU serves Lee, Hendry, and Glades County on a daily basis. This is a population of over 500,000. The DCF formula identifies the need for 50 beds.
