Statewide Interest: |
The purpose of this request is to fill a gap in the continuum of care for individuals with serious and persistent mental illnesses in Lee County. This is consistent with the statewide initiatives to serve individuals with mental illnesses in the community, and to provide the medical care that is necessary- no more and no less- consistent with managed care principals. |

Project Description: |
The Secure Residential Treatment Program (SRT) will provide 10 beds of intensive psychiatric care in a secure residential setting for up to 90 days. With the shortage of inpatient psychiatric services in this community, this has become an essential element in the continuum of care. The SRT will serve individuals who need a secure step down from the Crisis Stabilization Unit, individuals who are involved in the criminal justice system and need psychiatric stabilization, particularly those individuals involved in Mental Health Courts, and individuals with serious mental illnesses who have a violent history. This program is available in other Districts in Florida. The Department of Children and Families formula for the number of crisis stabilization unit beds is 10 beds per 100,000 population. Using this formula, Lee County needs 50 beds. This assumes the availability of private psychiatric beds. Lee County has only 30 adult crisis stabilization unit beds, and there are no psychiatric hospital beds. The SRT would be an alternative to meeting the unmet need.
In July, 2004, over 60% of the individuals served in our Rieves Residential Program had a recent history of violence that precipitated incarceration or a state hospital admission. During the fourth quarter of FY 2004, Mental Health Court referred almost half of the individuals served in Rieves

Is this a project related to 2004 hurricane damage? |
No |
|
Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
This program will serve approximately 40 individuals a year. Because almost half of the individuals currently served at Rieves (the district's only residential treatment program) will be more appropriately served in a secure setting, this will increase access to Rieves for individuals with serious mental illnesses by 40%.
