Project Description:
The Holocaust Documentation and Education Center, Inc. is a non-profit, non-denominational, educational reference, resource, and documentation effort devoted to teaching today's youth the evils adn dangers of racial hatred, bigotry, discrimination, and indifference. In 1994, The Holocaust Documentation and Education Center proudly authored and sucessfully lobbied into legislation the Holocaust Education Mandate as Florida Statue 1003.42, which states that the Holocaust is to be taught "In a manner hat leads to an investigation of human behavior, and understanding of the ramifications of prejudice, racism, and stereotyping, and an examination of what is means to be a responsible and respectful person, for the purposes of encouraging tolerance of diversity in a pluralistic society and for nurturing and protecting democratic values and institutions." In the aftermath of 9/11/01 and the Iraqi War, this has become a significant and timely mandate with a purpose. Our educational programs help to fulfill the mission of the mandate. With the opening of the Holocaust Documentation and Education Center in Hollywood which will feature the first South Florida Holocaust Museum, we will now have the capability to provide on site teacher training as well as, for the first time, online e-training in addition to our annual college-accredited Summer Teacher Institutes on Holocaust Education. We will be partnering with various colleges and universities in our tri-county area to provide this unique opportunity not only for teachers within the 67 districts but also outside of the state of Florida.

Is this a project related to 2004 hurricane damage? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
The impact of increasing, enhancing, and enriching teacher training and resources through e-training access and frequent on site scheduled symposia will be far reaching throughout the 67 school districts therefore fulfilling the goals and mission of the Florida mandate. This will afford us the opportunity of reaching the thousands of elementary and middle and high schools within these districts to teach the universal lessons and implications of the Holocaust.
