Project Description:
Madison collection system reliability upgrade, including pump station replacement at two locations; forcemain upgrade & provision of standby power to a sewage pumping station which is a primary collection & conveyance station.

Is this a project related to 2004 hurricane damage? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Environmental health protection by eliminating wastewater discharge created by overflow experienced at these lift stations where raw sewage migrates to an active sinkhole. The railroad lift station was installed in the 1970's and is in need of replacement. Additionally, since the installation, flows to the lift station have increased causing the pumps to cycle more frequently. This major lift station is a collection point for a large minority population in west madison and is currently operation at peak capacity. The primary goal of this project is to protect the public and address current health and safety issues associated with raw sewage overflows. The existing lift station has been identified as a source of raw sewage overflows and has been identified for replacement for several years. By constructing a new lift station designed for current and projected future flows, the station will be capable of handling the peak hour. Additionally, a new standby generator will be installed with automatice transfer capabilities. The addition of the standby generator and automatice transfer switch will provide an additional factor of safety in the event of power failure at the station. Improving the lift station will ensure that the public and environment will be protected from coming in contact with raw sewage. Recently, the H&R Block lift station backed up and flooded a local business causing a health risk to the individuals at this business and costing the city thousands of dollars in cleanup.
