Project Description:
FANM, an acclaimed and comprehensive advocacy and social service agency for the 350,000+ Haitians who make a home in Miami, proposes the program "Empowering Women for a Better Future." By training women who have small informal businesses in the haitian community in business operations skills, licensure, legal requirements and sales tax compliance, over-all record keeping, and customer service, these women will be able to start and manage full-time businesses as private, for-profit entities. this cadre will form a network of Haitian women entrepreneurs, who will become mentors for other women who will be trained and develop skills to get them off the welfare rolls. This group will alson be trained in and employ best practices of microenterprises nation-wide to assure sustainability. According to the 2000 Censue, Miami ranks the poorest of all major cities in the US: 32% of the residents live in poverty; 74.6% speak a language other than English in the home. The median income is less than half tht of the rest of the county, with many of the poorest residents of this city living in Little Haiti. The poverty level, coupled with language barriers and lack of formal education, particularly impacts Haitian women, many of whom are the primary source of support for their families and work in hospitality industries. Since 9/11/01, most of these women now work two and three jobs and may still be underemployed.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
By utilizing linguistically and culturally appropriate technical assistance and training, this program will be a model of grassroots community economic development that will have a sustained and growing positive impact on the infrastructure of our community. This project will also be well-documented, and the development of training materials in Kreyol will be replicable and available for use in other communities with similar concerns and situations.
