The Legislature has recognized the importance of baseball spring training facilities to the economy of the State of Florida providing funding mechanism in statutes 212.20 and 288.1162. The rehabilitation of stadiums is crucial to the economic health of the state. Many teams are leaving Florida for Arizona and taking the fans with them. Non-residents fan spending outside the stadium is estimated at $94.9 million. Total fan expenditures outside the stadium for both Florida and non-Florida residents are estimated to be approximately $103 million for the 2000 spring training baseball season. If you add direct expenditures ( needs of the spring training operations of the MLB teams and the stadium and concessionaire owners ) and residents spending, the total is $133.7 million for the goods and services, $4.5 million for the salary and wages for 323 full-time employees |

Project Description: |
The Fort Lauderdale Stadium is 43 years old. In order to remain up to date with player development and major league baseball standards, the Orioles need to have their Major League and Minor League operations at the same location. This would require expanding the Fort Lauderdale Stadium Complex by replacing the aging stadium and two practice fields with a new modernized staidum, six practice fields and all the baseball amenities that are consistent with other new facilities located within the state. |

Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
The rehabilitation of the stadium will insure that the Baltimore Orioles will continue to train in Fort Lauderdale and continue to pump more than one million into the local economy every spring. The direct sales tax benefit will continue at $1.6 million dollars and the overall economic impact to the community of $25 million dollars will also continue.
In addition, the stadium will be able to continue hosting other activities such as high school baseball tournaments, fantasy Baseball Camps, the Joe DiMaggio Legends' Game, car sales events, and concerts |
