Project Description:
FANM, an acclaimed and comprehensive advocacy and social service agency for the 350,000+ Haitians who make a home in Miami, proposes "Pwojet Men Nan Men" (Project Hand IN Hand), an initiative to use culturally and linguistically sensitive non-traditional outreach and education methods to bring vitally important services to this underserved very low-to-moderate income population. These services will include: health and wellness education, health screenings, parenting classes, mental health services and access and linkage to existing community services to Haitian women and families experiencing unfamiliarity or difficulties with established educational, welfare, and health systems. When Haitian families immigrate to the US, they bring traditional values of childrearing, discipline and health management with them and apply them to new situations in their adoptive culture. Lack of pain is considered a sign of wellness. Haitian women and families are a documented very high-risk group for many malignancies due to lack of knowledge about wellness and disease, available resources, language barriers, and lack of trust in or fear of the system. Delays in seeking services exacerbate the severity of their problems and the types of treament needed.

Is this a project related to 2004 hurricane damage? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
By utilizing non-traditional linguistically and culturally sensitive outreach methods in the local Haitian community setting and media to provide education, counseling, referral, case management and follow-up services about early detection and treatment of different ills (ranging from childhood diseases to HIV, breast cancer and mental illness) to this "hard to reach" population, FANM will reach, educate and assist hundreds of women and their families to have a better life. FANM will build a network of collaboration and referral among faith-based and other grassroots organizations, community agencies and health providers for the benefit of the community, and will also build a multi-cultural support network of women of color to share experiences and advocate for cancer prevention and cure.
