Haitian Heritage Museum

Requester: Eveline Pierre Organization: Haitian Heritage Museum

Project Title: Haitian Heritage Museum Date Submitted 1/4/2005 11:31:04 AM

Sponsors: Margolis, Wilson

Statewide Interest:
On the local and state level the Haitian Heritage Museum will be a catalyst for economic growth and tourism in Florida. This will result in new economic activity and new tax revenues impacting every sector fo the local and state economy. Immediate benefits to the local economy will result from initial revenue generated for fimes that provide construction materials, and services, which converts into employee salafies from new jobs. we at the Haitian Heritage Museum believe that this project will be beneficial to the entire state of Florida. It will be the only museum dedicated fully to the culture of the Haitian people. Because Florida is the state with the largest population of Haitians, and Haitian Americans, the development of this project should be considered for funding.

Project Description:
The Haitian Heritage Museum is requesting funding to assist in the developmental costs of this great project. The Museum is proposing to construct a 60,000 sqaure foot structure that can accommodate the diversity of program offerings. The first and most prominent space of the Museum exhibition space will host fine Haitian visual arts, exhibitions, and historic artifacts. Another program area that will facilitate community participation is the Artist Loft component created so that local and international art students can engage in a curriculum rich in Haitian art and culture. Finally, the structure will feature a 200 seat theater where another dimension of Haiti's rich culture can be expressed thru the medium of film. With a projected construction duration of approximately two years, procurement soft costs, and construction hard costs must be secured in order to sucessfully execute this project within the scheduled period of time. Presently, there is no other Museum in the Western Hemisphere dedicated solely to the Haitian culture. This will be a great opportunity to highlight the State of Florida while educating others about the contribution that the Haitian people have made as a whole. The Museum will also be a major tourist attraction bringing revenue into the South Florida area. By allocating funds to this project, the State of Florida will be making history.
