Project Description:
The Miami Museum of Science will enhance its nationally recognized mentoring program for low-income, first-generation college students whom First Lady Laura Bush awarded the "Institute for Library and Museum Services" national award in 2000. Currently 15% of Florida new hire teachers lack the appropriate certification in science while 9.3% of practicing science teachers are not certified to teach in their subject area. The program will continue to address the shortage of science teachers by conducting youth mentoring programs aimed at engaging traditionally under-represented youth in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The program will allow the museum to continue to provide support to graduates from its youth program during their early college years, at the same time exposing them to teaching as a career option contributing to the pipeline for future science teachers.

Is this a project related to 2004 hurricane damage? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
The museum will continue to serve up to 100 students per year affording them academic enrichment opportunities, technology integration, internship experiences, and college preparation. As a component of the continued support to graduates of the program, the Museum will create a series of summer internships for up to 40 of its youth program graduates now in college. The students will be provided with the opportunity to participate in the Museum's annual eight -week Summer Science Enrichment Program, under the guidance of Master teacher mentors. The selection process for participation will emphasize students pursuing degrees in science education as well as those with an interest in this career path. During the course of the program, students will have daily interaction with their assigned master teacher mentors whom will provide the interns with hands-on experience developing and delivering science activities, as well as professional guidance and counseling related to a career in teaching.
