Statewide Interest: |
Camillus House has repeatedly proven itself successful in reaching the most difficult-to-reach populations (the chronically homeless and the addicted) and turning them into productive, tax-paying members of society. The organization is uniquely qualified to undertake this mission by its long history in the community, state-of-the art treatment practices, highly qualified professional staff and compassionate care delivered in a faith-based setting. The JOBS program will prepare homeless persons to obtain and maintain quality jobs that pay a good wage and offer room for advancement, thereby ending the cycle of homelessness forever. |

Project Description: |
Camillus House, Inc. has provided humanitarian services to homeless persons in Miami-Dade for more than 44 years. Today the organization offers comprehensive services through multiple, integrated program areas including housing, drug and mental health treatment, and social services. Camillus is now requesting $100,000 in support of the organization's newly created Job Opportunity Bureau of Services (JOBS) program. JOBS is an enterprise-wide employment program that provides internal, formal job training programs in partnership with the local business community, so that graduates of Camillus treatment and housing programs develop valuable skill sets and obtain good jobs in the marketplace. JOBS will provide services to all 700 residential slots at Camillus, ultimately reaching more than 1,000 persons per year. Camillus has long provided the State with an effective model for addressing "chronic homelessness." Camillus is now seeking to capitalize on its success in providing treatment to this population, adding the vital program component of employment training and placement. The JOBS program will prepare homeless persons to obtain and maintain quality jobs that pay a good wage and offer room for advancement, thereby ending the cycle of homelessness forever. |

Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
Camillus saves the State an enormous amount of dollars in direct costs such as housing, treatment, job training and public assistance, while creating employed, tax-paying, productive community members, thereby decreasing the numbers of individuals on welfare both directly and indirectly . This funding also leverages more than $5.2 million in public grants, by adding this new layer of a JOBS program onto existing, funded programs. |
