Project Description:
In 1999 the city contracted to do a study on stormwater drainage. The study pointed out many deficiencies on the existing systemand provided recpmmendations for improvements.the city has been unable to fund this project. The city has 40 roads which have experience frequent washouts, flooding, and erosion problems. In addition, several areas in town experience stormwater accumulation problems with flooding due in part to steep grades and the age of the existing stormwater system. Furthermore, stormwater accumilation in "pocket" areas is an issue during significant rain events. In addition to public safety and flooding concerns, the city wishes to protect the environment and the Chipola River, a Florida Outstanding Waterway. As part of the cities long range plans to improve drainage, protect the environment and provide public access, the City submitted an acquisition project to the DEP for acquisition of 11 parcels (183 acres) along the Chipola River. The cityplans to improve the drainage system on this parcel by providing a stormwater facility that will offer additional treatment rather than allowing stormwater to flow directly into the Chipola River. This facility will be constructed in such a manner that citizens will be able to enjoy the facility in a passive recreational manner. The city would like to embark this project to upgrade the exsisting system.
