Project Description:
Provide liver and gastro-intestinal transplantation, pre-operative evaluation services to pediatric patients. This is highly specialized - the transplantation post-operative care, including the maintenance of the regimen of immunosuppressive drugs, is life-long.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
In 2002 there were 50 liver and small bowel transplantations with a survival rate of 86 percent. There are approximately 16 pediatric patients on the current waiting list. The post-operative maintenance assists the patient in maintaining the necessary regimen that will ensure the success of the transplant. Any rejection of the transplant would require a costly treatment the cost of which would be borne by the state.
