Project Description:
This City of Lauderdale Lakes' Comprehensive Drainage Improvement Project involves improving the stormwater drainage and canal systems in order to meet water quality and flood control standards as mandated by the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) regulations. Due to inadequate drainage and canal systems within the City, flooding is common in certain areas throughout the City during heavy rain events. In 1999, the City's Engineering Consultant performed a study on the existing drainage/canal systems and identified thirteen (13) locations, experiencing heavy flooding and/or ponding that require drainage facilities improvements to alleviate flooding conditions. In many portions of the canal system, sediments have reduced the effective depths of the canal system and caused canal bank erosion. The City's Engineering Consultant also recommended comprehensive drainage, dredging and canal bank improvements within the City. The City is in the process of implementing comprehensive drainage, canal dredging and bank stabilization projects. Based on recent hurricane trends, the City is requesting funding to design and complete the projects within its comprehensive stormwater plan on a more aggressive schedule.

Will this project reduce pollutant loadings to a water management district designated 'priority' surface water body? Yes
Name of water body: Lake Okeechobee located in the SFWMD

Describe how it will reduce loadings, identify anticipated load reductions for total suspended solids, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and other contaminants, and specify the practices that will be used to reduce loadings:
Based on the recommendations on the City's 1999 Stormwater Management Utility Report, a Stormwater Utility Program was implemented to oversee the Stormwater related systems within the City's boundaries. The program is intended to achieve the State's guidelines to reduce containments and pollutants in the range of 80% for most developments discharging into State, County and City water bodies. The actual load reduction for the total suspended solids, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and other containments are unknown at the present time. However, Broward County Department of Environmental Protection has implemented systems to monitor the reduction of the aforementioned containments within the City's and surrounding water bodies. To date, the City plans to implement or has already implemented the following programs to achieve State goals to reduce pollutant loads within the adjacent secondary and primary water bodies which ultimately flow to Lake Okeechobee located in the South Florida Water Management District. Those programs includes installing storm ceptors on all catch basin systems and pollution control systems, performing regular Stormwater maintenance functions on the City's drainage systems and canal water systems and completing stormwater related capital improvement projects. Therefore, the City is compliant with appropriate State/County regulations, related water policies requirements as well as the Stormwater element of the City's Comprehensive Plan.
