The FAMILY (Families Achieving More by Investing in and Leading their Youth) Program

Requester: Stacy Gromatski, Executive Director Organization: Capital City Youth Services

Project Title: The FAMILY (Families Achieving More by Investing in and Leading their Youth) Program Date Submitted 1/13/2005 10:39:49 AM

Sponsors: Lawson

Statewide Interest:
This project addresses strengthening families (involvement in positive activities, increasing protective factors, increasing parental involvement, etc.). Using data from the Florida Network of Youth and Family Services, (FNYFS), lack of family cohesion is shown as a statewide deficit in the families of at-risk youth. According to 2003/04 data from FNYFS, and other youth and family statistics, their findings suggest an urgent need for family-focused programs and services in Florida, and further demonstrate that FNYFS member agencies already have established connections with a population likely to benefit from the FAMILY Program.

Project Description:
The FAMILY Program is designed as an intensive family strengthening experience. The objective of FAMILY is to help families: 1. Increase their problem solving skills, 2. Achieve healthy stability of the home environment, 3. Increase cohesiveness between family members, 4. Instill the value of education in their youth, and 5. Develop healthy relationships with schools and other community organizations. The FAMILY Program involves weekly, three-hour sessions, over a seven week period. Each evening begins with a dinner, which gives program instructors the opportunity to develop rapport with participants and to observe general family functioning. After dinner youth and parents attend separate groups for instruction. The last 30-45 minutes of each evening consists of family-building activities that allow youth and parents to share what they have learned. The FAMILY Program uses research-and evidence-based curricula, such as: Redirecting Children's Behavior (RCB), Parents Who Care, and Strengthening Families, depending on identified needs. These are internationally known parenting education curricula that emphasize positive discipline techniques.
