Project Description: |
The Project is to significantly expand programs of benefit to persons with intellectual disabilities, on a statewide basis.
THe Proven Healthy Athletes Programs, successfully conducted, will be significantly expanded through this investment. These programs include vision, dental, hearing, and fitness screenings. The program relies heavily on volunteer professionals and provides training for professionals and para-professionalsin the proper care of, and specialized techniques of care for, people with intellectual disabilities.
THe Athlete Leadership Programs (ALPs) are multifaceted direct services programs designed to teach the individual involved to become self-advocates and to fully participate, with their families in the community. Included in the training are programs for speech, governance, and program and advocacy training. |

Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
The Principal Objectives Include:
-Providing health-screening services, along with care components, to a much underserved population
-Providingtraining to professionals and para-professionals who often have not been trianed to provide services to the inellectually disabled population
-Providing for long term continuation of these programs and services through a well-trained group of volunteers
-Providing the program particpants with specific skills to become self-advocates, involved in the community and to carry th emessage of benefits of participation to other qualified participants. Trained athletes will become recruiters.
-Recruiting new athletes and providing support for economically disadvantaged and hurrican affected counties. |
