Project Description: |
Funding is being requested for the purchase of psychotropic medications. These medications are provided to clients of the Broward County Substance Abuse and Health Care Services Division (Broward Addiction Recovery Center- BARC) who have co-occurring disorders, substance abuse and psychiatric issues. Maintaining these clients on their psychiatric medications allows them to participate successfully in programs to treat their substance addictions.
BARC historically has provided these medications to our Residential clients with medication costs continuing to increase annually. Prior to July 1, 2004, the North Broward Hospital District provided these medications to Outpatient clients of BARC through their Primary Care Clinics. Effective June 1st, the Hospital District no longer provides prescriptions for psychiatric medications for clients who present with psychiatric issues as their primary health issue. This is regardless of whether or not the individual is a Primary Health Care patient. As a result of this policy shift, the County through its Substance Abuse and Health Care Services Division has been forced to seek alternative funding in order to ensure that these medications are available for its clients. The services that BARC provides consist of evaluation and assessment; medical detoxification; residential day treatment; outpatient services; and residential treatment services for substance abuse. |
