Project Description:
This project consists of two initiatives. First, it will integrate and enhance academic/admn computing support. Second, it will enable the College to expand its international scope in Latin America and the Caribbean. The competencies related to information technology have become essential components of a liberal arts education. New College must assure that all students have access to and master current technological tools. In keeping with our goal of making the most efficient and innovative use of campus resources, New College proposes to create an Information Technology Resource Center to integrate essential technological support and address critical curricular needs. It will provide students, faculty and staff access to hardware, software applications, multimedia and classroom presentation tools, online learning systems, formal technical training, research support, and a peer tutoring program. The need for a significant expansion of the international scope of New College's academic curriculum was highlighted in our 2004 academic strategic plan. Given Florida's strategic position in the region, and the fact that a significant number of faculty share scholarly interests in the area- from anthropology and literature to biology and political science-the Latin American and Caribbean studies Initiative is the first phase of this expansion. It will make available additional instructional staff, off-campus study coordination and travel funding to support the academic pursuits of students and faculty in this important economic, cultural and political region of the world.

Is this a project related to 2004 hurricane damage? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
The Information Technology Resource Center will increase efficiency by integrating existing resources with planned infrastructure enhancements, provide students and faculty increased access to computing and digital technology and increase the level of training and technical assistance available to the campus community. The Latin American/Caribbean Studies Initiative will alllow greater numbers of New College students to acquire fluency in Spanish, enhance campus diversity through visiting Latin American/Caribbean scholars and researches, provide opportunities for more students to acquire in-depth knowlege of other geographic areas and cultures and increase support for innovative research projects (e.g. botany, marine biology and archeology) in the region.
