Statewide Interest: |
With the tremendous growth in the Central Florida Area, a request is being made for additional State funds for the acquisition of two new vehicles for transportation of Central Florida residents and tourist visiting the area. With ridership ever increasing (7% over the last year), more residents rely on LYNX as their primary means of transportation to get to and from work, and tourists utilize LYNX to travel to local area attractions.
These new vehicles would also be critical in a statewide evacuation plan. For instance, LYNX Buses were instrumental in transporting evacuated individuals to and from shelters and places of employment during all three of the hurricanes of 2004 that affected Central Florida. |

Project Description: |
LYNX is seeking funding to add two additional buses to our fleet to keep up with the increased ridership. LYNX has seen a 7% increase in ridership over the last year. In addition, 100 of our 238 bus fleet are eligible for retirement. THe average useful life of a bus is 12 years or 500,000 miles. Our buses have reached 500,000 miles in just 6 years.
Fifty percent of the funding is currently in place through a local match and we are seeking $300,000 in matching funds through the local member project process. This request has been approved by the LYNX Board of Directors, which includes FDOT District 5 Secretary and elected officials from Orange, Osceola and Seminole Counties. |
