Statewide Interest:
The state of Florida will benefit fiscally from a cure for Alzheimer's as it will reduce the number of Floridians suffering from Alzheimer's by mid-century. By this date, without a cure, as many as 1.5 million Floridians will suffer from Alzheimer's at a cost to the state of over $40 billion.

Project Description:
Increased funding will expand and continue the current initiative to recruit world-class Alzheimer's disease faculty and successfully secure a federally-funded National Institute on Aging Alzheimer's Research Center (ADRC). These funds will be used for new faculty recruitment and seed funding of novel, high-risk but huge impact diagnostic and treatment strategies, including genetic, molecular, and cellular therapeutic agents in combination with rehabilitation, to significantly reduce the devastating fiscal and personal consequences of Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's affects an estimated 10% of those over age 65 and 50% of those over age 85. Of the 4 million Americans afflicted with Alzheimer's, more than 10% reside in Florida. Without a cure, it is estimated that by mid-century, as many as 1.5 million Floridians will suffer from Alzheimer's at a cost to the state of over $40 billion. It is therefore in the state's best interest to help secure a cure or treatments for this disease.
