CBIRS Request 2766

Community Budget Issue Requests - Tracking Id #2766
Automotive Training Facility

Requester: E. Ann McGee, President Organization: Seminole Community College

Project Title: Automotive Training Facility Date Submitted 1/16/2004 4:50:56 PM

Sponsors: Webster

Statewide Interest:
Seminole Community College (SCC) operates the state's premier automotive training program, partnering with the Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Raytheon Company, and the Central FL Automobile Dealers Association. Additionally, ISUZU Corporation, Daimler-Chrysler, American Honda, Robert Bosch Corporation, Motorcraft, and AC-Delco have approached the college about operating training programs for their corporations. These corporations and their affiliates serve the entire state of Florida. SCC has been unable to accomodate those requests because of inadequate and outdated classroom and laboratory facilities. According to data provided by the FL Research & Economic Database, FL will need 9,003 new trained automotive technicians by the year 2009. Seminole Community College presently produces approximately 125 trained entry-level automotive technicians each year. Additionally, SCC operates the only General Motors Satellite Training Center in the state, and was instrumental in starting one of the first-in-the-nation, industry-funded technician training programs for General Motors Dealerships. Construction of the proposed automotive training facility will enhance SCC's ability to produce the trained technicians needed state wide. The new facility will enable SCC to increase the number of training classes offered from 5 to 11 annually, double the # of enrollments and graduates from 125 to 250 annually, and increase the # of technicians returning for continuing education from 1000 to more than 2000 annually. Graduates of our training programs are employed throughout the state with annual earning potentials as high as $50,000 to $80,000 only 2 years after graduation.

Project Description:
SCC proposes to construct a new automotive training facility at a total cost of approximately $6.5 million. This facility will be an advanced, state of the art, training center designed to train prospective new automotive technicians in the repair of today's technologically sophistocated vehicles. The facility will be constructed in collaboration with the Central FL Automobile Dealers Association and its industry partners. Graduates of SCC's program will receive advanced certification from manufacturer-specific programs, as well as nationally-recognized ASE Automotive Service Excellence certifications. All SCC automotive programs are ASE-NATEF (National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation), certified training sites.

Is this a water project as described in Chapter 2002-291, Laws of Florida? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
This funding will enable SCC to add 6 automotive industry partnerships. Additional measurable outcomes will be the increased # of automotive technician training classes offered each year, as well as the increased annual number of enrollees & graduates as indicated above. It is estimated that the new facility will enable SCC to increase the # of training classes offered from 5 to 11 annually, double the # of enrollments and graduates from 125 to 250 annually, and increase the # of technicians returning for continuing education from 1000 to more than 2000 annually once the facility is constructed and fully operational.
