CBIRS Request 45

Community Budget Issue Requests - Tracking Id #45
Disaster Preparedness and Response

Requester: William B. Epps, Jr. Organization: American Red Cross, Broward County Chapter

Project Title: Disaster Preparedness and Response Date Submitted 1/6/2004 6:05:36 PM

Sponsors: Campbell

Statewide Interest:
The Red Cross is responsible for the operation of shelters to house evacuees during a hurricane and a weapon of mass destruction event. We work hard with the Broward County Office of Emergency Management and municipal professionals to ensure this critical component of public safety is accomplished. We also assists local families left homeless by fires, floods, and other natural and/or man-made disasters. Many of the families helped would be unable to secure permanent replacement housing with only their own resources. Our assistance reduces the homeless population in Broward County. The establishment and execution of a community disaster education program helps the entire community better prepare for and recover from disaster.
