Florida International University Honors State Senator Ileana Garcia at Annual Legislative Reception with Prestigious ‘Champion Award’ for Her Successful Work on Behalf of FIU
Senator Garcia has secured millions in recurring base funding, vital to FIU’s annual budget, as well as $33.5 million toward the completion of the total $63 million Phase II construction for their notable Engineering Center.
Florida International University will be recognizing on Thursday, August 11th at 4:00 PM the endeavors of State Senator Ileana Garcia by awarding her with the ‘Champion Award’ at this year’s Legislative Award Reception. The award recognizes Senator Garcia’s persistent and successful efforts in advocating for and securing state funding for FIU, which includes a most recent allocation of $5,000,000.
“Florida International University is a great source of pride not just to South Florida, but to our state. It’s been very rewarding to fight for these additional funds for FIU knowing that they will go toward growing the stellar campus and creating greater opportunities for our community,” stated Senator Garcia.
The 25,000 square foot state-of-the-art Engineering Center (EC) will be a headquarters for world-class research ranging from the likes of architecture to medical technology and cyber surveillance leading the nation in breakthrough engineering research. Using data collected by the Department of Defense from the President’s Jobs & Competitiveness Council, the FIU 2020 Strategic Plan, requires an additional 10,000 engineers in projection for the next decade. Senator Garcia’s work will facilitate the financial resources for the final Phase II of the Engineering Center to get this development underway by installing brand new classrooms and collaborative spaces with both instructional and research based laboratories focused on STEM curriculum.
