Florida Senate Passed Bill To Prohibit Gender Affirming Care For Minors

Tallahassee, FL – In a move to usurp parental rights in determining care for their children, the Florida Senate passed a bill to ban gender affirming care to minors. Senator Linda Stewart (D – Orange County) had the following to say after voting in opposition to the bill:

“We shouldn’t bar parents from determining what is best for their child. Gender affirming care is often critical healthcare for the wellbeing of transgender youth, or any young person who is struggling to understand their sense of self,” said Stewart.

The bill additionally has negative effects for adults. It ties the hands of physicians by restricting the administration or prescription of gender affirming medications to in person appointments only, effectively removing the option of telehealth services.

“This bill further stigmatizes discussions between children and their parents about identity. This bill will just continue the cycle of misinformation and deprivation of appropriate medical care to one of our most marginalized communities,” said Stewart.
