Broward Hurricane Preparedness

Fort Lauderdale —

Florida is currently in a declared state of emergency as we prepare for the possible landfall of Hurricane Irma. It is important to understand that Broward County is directly in the storm’s currently projected path. This is a very powerful and dangerous storm, so please take the proper precautions to be ready for the possibility of a direct hit from a category 5 hurricane.

At this link, you will find Broward County’s Hurricane Preparedness Guide. This document should provide you with all of the necessary information to be ready and safe for the coming storm. Please print this out right away; this information could save your life. Be sure to find your evacuation zone on the map in the packet. If your zone is asked to evacuate, be sure to follow all instructions to ensure your safety, and the safety of your family.

This handbook includes the following:

  • Information on how to develop a hurricane plan for you and your family

  • A checklist to be sure that you have everything that you need to safely evacuate or, if you are not in an evacuation zone ride to out the storm.

  • Registration information for shelters (including pet-friendly shelters), emergency email updates, and vulnerable populations.

  • Tips for how to safeguard your home.

  • Information for those with special needs

  • Shelter and evacuation transportation information

  • Broward County’s Hurricane Evacuation Map

  • Information on how to stay safe in the aftermath of a storm

  • Information on how to deal with power outages

  • Information on hurricane recovery

  • A list of important numbers to have on hand, including emergency services

Again, the Broward County Hurricane Preparedness Guide can be found here:

I cannot stress enough the importance of preparedness when it comes to this storm. We have a real possibility of dealing with a life-threatening hurricane in the coming days, so everything that you can do to be ready is of the utmost importance. Should Broward be impacted by this storm, our office and staff will be here to help in any way we can.

Stay safe,

Senator Gary M. Farmer, Jr.
